A Veil Enlightens You
A Veil Enlightens You
Been cursed to kiss forever
In solitude, consoled
By the love light cast upon myself
But was stolen by a foe.
For though I see myself,
With the light that shines on you
The rays that made it known to all
Hid me from your view.
Darkness creeps till black
Is pitch: your wisdom is a fool’s ---
A stupid hope illumines me
A veil enlightens you.
Ruthie is a gal from Baguio City who's trying to learn the ropes in Quezon City. She works in an NGO at the moment, and is blessed to have been given the opportunity to solve distressed people's problems. In the process, she learns more about herself and her worth and her role in human liberation and labor vindication.
Don't worry Talulot!
Kristine logs in every now and then but she choses not to post-- I noted that. *smiles* (Pmel notices a lot of things and usually keeps quiet about it.)
hi pmel and talulot
yes pmel is right I logged in yesterday to delete my unworthy posts unfortunately some I couldn't delete don't know why I'll try again today hi to everyone!
Ms. Ruth your poem is great as always but I don't know enough to say something or comment on it intelligently. I just want to say that you've always been an inspiration to me!
Hello Kristine Anne! How are you?! :)
Hello Kristine Anne,
Thanks for your sweet words here. I couldn't send you a pm and your site ceased to exist in *** where we are friends, and I wonder why, but nonetheless, I do hope you're doing fine and enjoying the -ber/brrrrr months in Baguio.
I heard from Ate Pau (I got her email), and I'm glad she's doing good, too. I miss you both so much.
I will try to catch up on your poems and I'll be pitching my praises* in a little while. :)
I wrote this poem to commemorate a friend's unrequited love for another common friend. When a girl loves a boy and the latter ignores the former, whew, what a sight to behold. Hehehe. Especially when the whole class knows the girl's feelings for the guy. There, that's the story. :)
Take care. Gotta go. :)

This poem was written 2 years ago... :)
Hello there Talulot!
Actually, I write from their shoulders (hehe, nabibigatan na sila). Maam Hernandez was one of my favorite teachers because she had this uncompromising EYE, and it didn't matter that I got a 3 in my first write-up. I was also taught by Maam Vickie Rico-Costina and I just looove her passion in literature as well as in writing.
I don't deserve the praise, you know. I just thank God that I was given the chance to express my thoughts and feelings in words, just as you express yours in your compositions, poems and songs. :)
hehe sige, I'll see if I can climb Kennon before Dec. 5. I do "mission trips" during December I might not be able to make it to the reunion pero I will try. Be assured that I will spread the word around. Is your group going to sing there? Btw, I was once a part of UP Tinig Amianan. You? Tabak? Hmm, Tinig? Outcrop? hehehe. :)
Ciao. God bless you.
Ruthie
outcrop? di nila ako tinanggap hehehe. UP MAroons with samar opo
I love ma'am costina and her cats.. hehehe. and i love mam jolens eventhough i got a barely passing grade from her (wink wink)
Yes I do agree, everything we have is from God and I also believe that God wants us to share it with others.. that's why you have my pat!
ngay, haan met. baka tinig ang kumanta wala namang reunion concert akong naririnig.
teka- i was once lady guitarist of tinig alongside sir vince and sir toto and lolo ben ( influences ko si sir toto and sir vince sa paggawa ng kanta at pati si kua jorrel at na-iinspire ako sa boses ni rizza at mam rozzel balmores), i was also a resident actress of UP Dulaang Baguio (but never was a TABAK) Pahinungod din me at varsity. teka, baka magkakilala tayo? hmmm

Hello Talulot!
I've been keeping mum, but yes, I know your face. Pero hindi ko alam kung nagabot pa tayo sa Tinig...:)
I'm soprano 2, and sang alongside Ms. Balmores and Maam Lulu Hamada (+). I soooo love Lolo Ben and Sir Toto. I left when I was in my 2nd year (your first year). That's the same year I left Outcrop, too, for personal reasons (si Kuya Eugene ang Editor-in-Chief noon). Lolo Ben was preparing me to sing the part of a "bird" in one of the songs he was planning for the group to sing, but I left before that happened.
Nga pala, I was also a member of Philo Circle. Likewise, I know all about Ma'am Costina's cats and her "prison experience" and her car Noah. :)
Hehe, small world, huh? :)
Ruthie
small world nga!
kasi familiar din ang face mo eh. naalala ko si ate chari sa voice mo. di na po tayo nagkaabutan 2nd year po ako nakasali. pero fan naman ako ng tinig lagi.
God bless po.

romantic you...
i'm a hopeful romantic and I feel with your words. I like your use of verses spilling over to the next line. The over-all effect, though hopeful, is heartbreaking. Your use of paradox with 'veil enlightens' makes it even more so.
Ms. Barrett, I hope you'll meet your Mr. Browning someday for only he can be worthy of such a maiden as you...
Thanks :)
Antoneli,
I'm truly honored to hear scholarly and well-thought comments from you, Antoneli, and I plan to benefit from them. The verses-spilling-over-the-next-line thing, well, was just an experiment and I didn't know how it was supposed to work or fit in the scheme of poetry. I haven't read that far :) not that I'm studying the technical aspect of poetry because honestly, I don't get any of it.
Thank you. And do take care.
P.S. Do Mr. Brownings still exist in this day and age? I seriously doubt your proposition :) hehehe
Ruthie
just appreciate good literature
in miss barrett's time who knew that both she and her husband-to-be would be remembered centuries after their deaths for their contribution to literature.
I have an open mind. Who knows?
I have no formal study in poetry either, just a few workshops in tula. But there is such a thing as verses spilling over in both english and filipino poetry.
I want to read your poems, please!
Yeah, seasoned poets do the spilling over all the time and so, effortlessly, but I didn't know how to get it right and so this was my first experiment, I guess.
I love Miss Barrett's poems, too. She was crippled, right? And then because of love, I believe, she was able to walk, with the help of her prince. Yeah, I want to believe my Mr. Browning will come. I hope I recognize him when he does! ^ . ^*
Filipino poetry is even more difficult to do, I think. :) I hope I can read your poems, please. Do you have them here? ^.^*
Ruthie
I don't have them here...
I have so far only written in Filipino and I think my best poem was the one that got critiqued by Sir Bobby Añonuevo. Graduation required that we submitted at least five poems. I graduated from the workshop but did not make the grade. I did not become a member of Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo. But the panayam with the who's who in Philippine Literature made a difference in me. If not as a writer or poet yet then as person which is a lot. I will post my poem in my blog. You can find it there. Hope you like it even if it's different.
Hi again!
Hmm ako happy na ako na you're reading my poems. Grabe, the first real poet I met here at Filipino Writer. I hope I be given the chance to attend workshops in the near future so I can hone whatever it is that is raw :) Haay busy pa kasi ngayon.
Linangan sa Imahen, Retorika at Anyo - You'll make the grade I'm sure just decide to join again. :)
Ruthie
I'm glad, too, that you've appreciated mine...
LIRA taught me that you can never know what to expect from your readers. They will tend to read your works in resonance to the events in their lives.
And I'm not a poet yet. Sir Vim taught me not to feel complacent or content just hobnobbing with 'mga dakilang pinoy'. I feel blessed that they became a part of my life while I was still trying to pick up the shattered pieces.
You may join the yearly poetry clinic held every June but applications should be in early. It's Filipino but you will get a chance to be taught poetry by no less than Becky Añonuevo,an award-winning poet proficient in both English and Filipino or if you prefer English poetry, by Alfred Yuson (if LIRA is lucky to get him again for the lecture on English poetry). If interested, pls. visit http://www.liraonline.org. Just submit any 5 or 6 of your poems. Fee is P500 in 2004 and 05. I'm not quite sure now but it will be minimal.
Thanks again for the effusive praises. Believe me, the feeling is mutual.
Instructions, noted. :)
True. We should never stop striving. Tom Clancy once said a writer has to write and write until he gets it damn right. I believe it will always be a process and an addiction to best oneself (not others) one work after another. :)
Thank you for boldly sharing your traumatic experience. I'm glad that phase is over and now, you've got lots of material and a whole range of emotions to access when you need them for your canvass. Well, there's truth to the verse which says "all things work together for good"!
I have found another friend, haven't I? A pen wielding friend, hehehe.
Ruthie
pen-wielding friend-count me in!
Yes, it is ourselves that we should always strive to conquer. Running taught me this as well. And for pete's sake, don't call me by my real name Mary Angelica. It's sounds too staid and saintly, which i definitely am not.

Mae Ann, then...
Ms. Mae Ann, then. ^ . ^ *
Ruthie
hehehehe....
Sige, ate na lang.
Heheh, natatawa talaga ako sa pm mo, ate. hehehe, naku, siguro matagal pa yun. Heheheh... :)

I'm glad at bumalik na ang
Hello Jons!
Kaw naman o, bituin, ngek :) siguro bituing walang ningning. :)
Salamat at nagustuhan mo ito. Eto pag di masyadong busy tatambay-tambay muna dito. Dami kasing sinisisante kaya dami ko ring trabaho ^.^*
Haay naku Jons, if I know, Hopeful Romantic ka rin kasi kaya mahilig ka rin sa love poems. hehehe. Peace.
Ingatz. :)
