“At Kung Ang Puso ay Hindi Maaaring Umibig”

Pagsasalin ni: Jeazelle H. Salunga

At kung sa puso ay hindi maaaring umibig,

at hindi maaring gamutin ng kamatayan o paghimbing,

walang kagandahan sa mga sugat sa puso

wala itong tunog

Tinakasan ng kagandahan

At ang pagsibol ng bulaklak na mapaghihimala,

Pati ang musika at pagsasalita ay lumisan

Sa sumpa ito’y lumaya

O Diyos, ang araw o ang sumpa

Maging ang mangingibig ng magandang salita

Wala itong himig, wala

Walang itong sugat, wala.

My translation of the poem "And if the Heart Cannot Love" by: Jose Garci Villa. i used to need this in my literature class. I chose the poem “And If the Heart Can Not Love” By Jose Garcia Villa for a very simple reason, I like it so much. I can certainly feel the sorrow of the person who wrote it. Falling in love is very beautiful and magical, but the magic doesn’t always last for all. Not all couples are successful in making their relationship last. Trials are faced and if the love, faith and trust are not enough, the relationship might end. You’ll end up broken. But being broken is not the worst thing that might happen; it is, not loving at all. Living in a life without love is not living at all. You’ll be like a zombie, alive but you won’t feel anything. You don’t feel magic and then pain. You won’t face trials that will make you stronger. Not loving at all leaves our hearts wounded. It is worse than being broken. It just so happened that we don’t notice it for you don’t know how the magical feeling of love feels like.

While reading and translating this poem, I have experienced an intense passion for poetry. It is as if this is something that I have always wanted yet I have never done before. It is as if I’m a part of the poem. Pain and grief strike me; it touched my heart as if the angel of pain is just beside me. Everything felt as if I have lost someone that my heart really desires. But I didn’t, I just read a poem, a very beautiful yet lonely poem.

I have decided to translate the poem to our National Language so that more people would understand it, more people would appreciate it. Our National Language shows more intensity compare to others. I wanted more people to appreciate the literary pieces made by our national artist so I tried to translate it so that they would understand it better.
