“Children’s Letters to God” Returns on Stage
High-spirited and inquisitive young actors have won audience and critics’ approval in the one-weekend opening run of Off-Broadway hit musical “Children’s Letters to God.” Thank Dear God, these talented kids are back on a longer run at Insular Life Auditorium, Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang on Oct. 6 and 13, and at Carlos P. Romulo Theater, RCBC Plaza on Oct. 20 and 21.
The delightful musical will once more showcase 2007 World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) Over-All Champion of the World Aria Clemente, Singapore-based thespian and singer Julia Abueva, Micah dela Cruz, Tippy dos Santos, Moreen Guese, Vince Ching, the Sison brothers – Marek, Enzo, and Ruiz, Jaime Calabig, and Nacho Tambunting. Addition to the cast is Bianca Rogoff.
“Dear God. Are you really invisible or is that just a trick?” “Dear God. How come you did all the miracles in the old days and you don't do any now?” These are just some of the hard-hitting questions and tell-it-like-it-is revelations that make up “Children’s Letters to God,” the musical inspired by the international best-selling book of the same title.
Taken directly from the letters of young people writing to the “Big G,” the musical follows the lives of five young friends as they voice beliefs, desires, questions, and doubts common to all people but most disarmingly expressed by children. Sixteen tuneful songs, and assorted scenes (some based on actual letters) explore timeless issues such as sibling rivalry, divorce, holidays, the loss of a beloved pet, the trials of being unathletic, and first love.
“Impressively, ‘Children’s Letters to God,’ held on to great poise and the steadiest of care, (Bart) Guingona and (Menchu) Lauchengco-Yulo’s sterling work with their young actors birthed a musical of pure, uncomplicated sentiment, all of it honestly earned. It must be seen to be believed.” (Philippine Daily Inquirer, October 2007)
Stuart Hample, the creator of the best selling book, has adapted “Children’s Letters to God” from the page to the stage with music by David Evans (Birds of Paradise) and lyrics by Douglas J. Cohen (No Way to Treat a Lady ). Bart Guingona directs with Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo as assistant director, Michael Williams as musical director, Denisa Reyes as choreographer, and Gino Gonzales as production designer.
The Manila production of “Children’s Letters to God” returns on stage at Insular Life Auditorium, Filinvest Corporate City, Alabang on Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. and 13 at 3 p.m., and at Carlos P. Romulo Theater, RCBC Plaza on Oct. 20 and 21 at 3 p.m. For ticket inquiries, call Ticketworld at (632) 891-9999 or visit www.childrensletterstogod.com.ph
