Dry Bones in Retrospect
Once upon a time
these dry bones lay
in the valley of the dead
communing with countless other dry bones
in unanimated discourse
when the Spirit in the winds
from the four corners of the earth
blew upon it sinew and skin
and breath
and they were dry bones no more
and it rose from the grave
and walked the earth
and rejoiced.
And that which was once dry bones
now thread the earth
in flesh and blood
and in mirth.
Yet, strangely, this being,
every now and again,
look in the way of the valley
wondering how it would feel like
to thread on dry bones
with bare feet
and to lay beside dry bones
and commune with them
in unanimated discourse.
Nothing was left behind in the valley
that was worth turning back to
for there is nothing there but death.
Ezekiel 37:1-14
