Situated among the Philippines' middle class society, Satirika features the lives of five friends: the childless couple Rey, a junior executive, and Tess, a budding photographer; Dom, a writer into his sixties and still a bachelor; Lib, freelance writer and former girlfriend of Rey; Bong, son of a rich magnate, former activist and student of Dom.

The play focuses on the upcoming photography exhibition by Tess, which features her most coveted work, Satirika. As the elements of their lives clash with the advent of another character, their world spirals revealing secrets they never dared to unravel, until now. Ultimately, one of them could only take as much and decides to commit the ultimate escape death.

The Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC), in cooperation with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, is sponsoring an essay writing contest focusing on the question, "Does the universality of human rights require a particular type of democracy?"

This question has been the subject of many debates in the international and regional arena. It has been argued that a true and meaningful realization of human rights entails not only protection of human beings from their violations and abuses but an establishment of a democratic system and institutions that will guarantee the preservation of human rights.

On the other hand, some basic tenets of democracy, such as majority rule, run counter to rights which individuals may expect the State to protect in the name of fundamental and universal human rights.

How about you? What is your take on this issue? Write down your thoughts; let us know what you think.

The best 15 essays shall receive prizes as follows: Top 4 to15 – Php 5,000 each; Third Prize - Php10,000; Secondd Prize - Php15,000; and First Prize – a trip to Germany and a seminar on human rights at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Leadership Academy.

Aside from these, the essays will also be published in a book. The publication hopes to shed light on the Filipino's perspective on the issue and fuel more discussions on human rights and raise greater awareness about the debate on human rights and democracy.

Contest Mechanics

1. The contest is open to all Filipinos.

2. Entries should be in English, encoded, double-spaced, with a minimum of 2,000 words and a maximum of 2,500 words.

Rockwell Drive, Rockwell Center, Makati City 1200.
Details showing the name of the writer, contact numbers, e-mail and mailing addresses should be placed on a separate sheet of paper. All entries shall be considered property of the Ateneo Human Rights Center (AHRC).

4. The decision of the judges, selected by AHRC, shall be final.

Earn $100-$500 Just By Telling Me Your Story!

Submission Guidelines for the Upcoming Book:

Writer Profits: "How I Got the Gig", Volume I

Description: The mission of the WriterProfits.com web site is to help writers find resources for more work and/or build a business so they can make their living as working writers, not writers who do other work for a living. How I Got the Gig, Volume I, is the first in a series of TRUE case studies from writers willing to tell other writers how they've "cracked the code" to attract new clients, more work, and better rates, or secure book deals, publishers and agents. If you have a marketing or promotion success story to share that will help other writers, tell me your story and, if accepted for use as a chapter in this book, you'll be paid for your submission. We buy first serial rights.

Deadline: All submissions for Volume I must be received no later than midnight, August 31, 2006, CST (Central Standard Time). No exceptions. Working writers respect deadlines!

Length: Each submission is to be chapter length, approximately 4,000-5,000 words. Longer and shorter submissions will be considered if the length is relevant to your story. Word count is less important than a complete, well-written, and helpful story.

Content: All submissions must be true and written in first person. Please do NOT write your story as an observer. Sidebars to accompany the story are welcome if relevant. Please keep in mind that the goal is to tell others how you succeeded in some aspect of the writing life that brought you monetary gain or significant recognition. I want to read about what you did AND how you did it. Self-serving "puffy" pieces will be immediately disqualified. You MUST send complete manuscripts. No queries or outlines will be accepted. You may submit more than one story.

Format: Submit your work as a Word or text document with minimal formatting (bold, underline, italics, etc). Please DO NOT WRITE IN ALL CAPS! PDF files are acceptable for submissions but, if your chapter is accepted, you must supply us with a text file so that we may cut and paste it into our layout. Spell check and edit your own work. While we will provide minimal editing for the final book, I expect writers to be able to write a nearly ready-for-publication chapter. Use 1.5 line spacing for easy reading. Title your work. Subtitles and headings throughout the text may also be used. Save the file using your name like this: gigbook-YourName.doc or gigbook-YourName.txt.

Compensation: One story will be chosen as the lead chapter based on helpfulness to others and the ingenuity of the idea being described. You are welcome to use humor and let your own writing style shine through as long as you maintain clarity of the information you are presenting. The lead will receive US$500. All other stories used in the book will receive US$100. Every published contributor will receive an About the Author resource block consisting of 5-10 lines that identify/describe you and allow you to give your contact information. Photos are optional but encouraged. Resource information and photos will be requested when final contributors have been chosen. Do NOT send them with your submission. As editor and publisher, I have sole discretion to choose the stories to be used for publication. Note: as a paid contributor, no royalties from sales will be offered to authors.

Publication: The book will be printed as a softcover trade publication with a four-color cover and converted into an ebook for a secondary online product available from this Web site. It will be promoted for review and made available to catalogs, bookstores, online stores, and other book sales outlets. Chosen contributors will also receive five complimentary copies of the printed book with an option to purchase additional copies at an author's discount to resell, use as promotional items for your business, or give as gifts to family, friends, colleagues or clients. Chosen contributors will be required to sign a release that states your submission is your original work, a true story, and not published elsewhere. The estimated date of publication is late October 2006. A final publication date will be determined and announced in mid September. If, for any reason, the book is not published, we offer a 10% kill fee to the signed authors.

Submissions: Email your submissions either as an email attachment or include the entire entry in the text of your email and send to: gigsubmit@writerprofits.com -- Put "Gig Story" in the subject line. Do not send submissions to my personal email account, they will be deleted. If you have questions, please send them to questions@writerprofits.com. While we prefer to receive submission via email, you can also opt to send your submission via snail mail, to: Nasus Publishing, Attn: Gig Book, PO Box 641, Prior Lake, MN 55372.

I look forward to reading your manuscript and am excited about the prospect of being able to share your How I Got the Gig story with your fellow aspiring writers.

Best regards,

Susan Carter

Butch Dalisay announces the deadline for the submission of literary works to the first issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature:

Quote:

FOLLOWING THROUGH on last week’s update on Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature which the UP Institute of Creative Writing will be publishing, I’d like to announce that the deadline for submitting stories, poems, and essays (in English and Filipino, for our first issue) is August 31, 2006. Please take note that only original, unpublished work will be considered.

For the story and the essay, we will consider work in the range of 12-30 pages double-spaced; for poetry, we will consider only suites or small collections of about four to seven poems, from which the editors will select at least three for publication. The essay could be a work of literary scholarship or criticism or creative nonfiction, formal or informal. We will consider short graphic novels or excerpts from longer work; what we actually publish will depend on the range and quality of the submissions.

All submissions will undergo a process of pre-screening by the editors, and shortlisted pieces will be reviewed by expert referees. I should probably forewarn our potential contributors that, as space is limited and as we will be putting the highest premium on quality through the refereeing process, getting in will be very difficult for all but the best work, and winning or having won a Palanca or a similar award will offer no guarantee of acceptance. For those accepted, however, Likhaan will pay commensurately high rates.

Kindly submit all contributions to us at likhaanjournal@gmail.com, accompanied by a brief self-introduction. Again, please don’t ask or expect me to provide an instant response to or a critique of your work; I have neither the time nor the inclination for this, and as the editor of the inaugural issue, I cannot be saying anything to influence our referees’ decisions. But I’ll be sure to acknowledge receipt of your work, also by e-mail.

Short Story Competition & Rules

Your own story on any subject in less than 2000 words. That’s all you have to do, and invest Euro 5 / Stg£4 /USD 7 or equivalent, and Euro 1000 could be yours. Start to-night, and when you have your first story written start your second one and then your third. You are free to submit as many as you wish. As Winner of the excellent prize of Euro 1000 you will also have the proud boast that it was David Marcus who judged your story best of a couple of hundred entries.

Competition entrants from England, Wales and Scotland and from America may not know David Marcus as well as we in Ireland know him. He is best remembered probably since the years 1968 –1988 when he presented the New Irish Writing page in The Irish Press. Many Irish writers started their careers under the influence of David Marcus at that time. David was also with Irish Writers and with Poetry Ireland for some years. Born in Cork, he was educated at Presentation College, at University College Cork and at Kings Inns - Ireland’s training school for Barristers. Fortunately for writers David did not spend his entire life working at the law.

A Competition which offers Euro 1000 as Prize is a good one. A Competition which has adjudication of Winner by David Marcus as well is worth ten times that money.

Get started.

Closing Date is 31st August 2006.

Good luck.

Thanks.

9. Entries will not be returned

10. For receipt enclose stamped self-addressed post card.

11. Each entry must have Entry Details on a separate sheet which must show name and surname of entrant, full postal address, phone number, email address if available, title of entry.

12. Entry, Entry Details, and Fee must be received not later than 31st August 2006 at Balbriggan Arts Festival, ‘Georgeville’ Church Street, Balbriggan, Co Dublin, Ireland.

13. Judge’s decision shall be final.

COMPOUND - New from The Film Source

COMPOUND, a sexy new psychological thriller (The Philippines, 2006,
110 min.), is signed for its exclusive world representation by Alex
Massis' The Film Source Company.

Written and directed by newcomer Will Fredo, COMPOUND exposes the
underbelly of the seemingly idyllic life behind the walls of an estate
home in the Philippines. Unexpected sexual couplings and subplots
suggest a contemporary "Upstairs/Downstairs," but Fredo's intense
COMPOUND hurls us into far darker territory as passions give way to
paranoia, political intrigue and violence.

open call for submissions: philippine speculative fiction vol.2

(I will repost this at the beginning of each month until September.

And to answer a couple of FAQs: while there is a minimum word count of 3000 words, if you feel your piece is strong, send it in anyway; and here's a handy definition of speculative fiction.

Feel free to cut and paste this announcement - in fact, I'd appreciate it. Hope to read your work soon!).

I am now accepting submissions of short fiction pieces for consideration for the anthology "Philippine Speculative Fiction Vol.2". Speculative fiction is the literature of wonder that spans the genres of fantasy, science fiction, horror, magic realism, surrealism or falls into the cracks in-between.

SINAG ARTS FOUNDATION presents Chong Wishing’s  BAKERETTA (Ghost Operatta)

A co-production with the Japan Foundation and Sinag Arts Foundation, Bakeretta is a psychological thriller, somewhat in the tradition of Japanese horror films like Ring and The Grudge, but with a quirky, musical twist!

An amateur theater company rehearses a modern ghost (bake) story – “The Ghost in the Toilet” and the mounting pressures of opening night get mixed up with their personal dramas, comedies and horrors. The spine-tingling play within a play within a play is set to be directed by the playwright himself, multi-awarded screenwriter and one of Japan’s most exciting theater directors, Chong Wishing. BEWARE…DON’T OPEN THE TOILET DOOR!

Hailed by author and art historian Manny Duldulao as the foremost Filipino colorist in the country, Danny Castillones Sillada explores an unusual amalgam of colors in his recent aesthetics in black , white and red – a temporary, if not permanent, departure from his vibrant and vivacious paintings. The result is dramatically mystifying, engaging the viewers to a black and white dreamscape accentuated with the elegant color of red.

A painter, poet, philosopher and performance artist, Sillada took a 360-degree detour from his vocation to the priesthood to embrace his artistic calling in the artworld.

His works, according to University of the Philippines (UP) professor and art critic Reuben Ramas Cañete, “are culled from manifold, eclectic sources, as diverse as his biographical experiences, and the polyglotality of the embedded culture of the Mindanaoan. Sillada’s works evoke a general air of hyperspatiality studded with the more everyday visualizations of terrestrial environments, reminiscent of the surreal hyperspaces of Yves Tanguy, E.M. Escher, Reñe Magritte and Paul Delvaux.”

In his 9th One--Man Show titled “D.C. SILLADA Convergence”, a suite of 2006 paintings will be unveiled slated for September 18, 2006 at the Lounge of The Podium along ADB Avenue, Mandaluyong City.

Vim Nadera, Director of the UP Creative Writing Institute, is also set to launch his book “KAYUMANGGI: TULARAWAN”, his fifth poetry collection at “D.C. SILLADA Convergence” on September 20, 2006 together with Lorina M. Javier’s Filipiniana fashion collection, which will be exhibited from September 20 – 22, 2006.

We need your "Heartbreak" stories!

We're a new publishing company on the lookout for original short works of fiction in English that are light, straightforward, and make for enjoyable reading.

For our first short story collection, the theme is "Heartbreak." Send your contributions to cozyreads[at]gmail[dot]com, or email us for more information.

(And yes, we know getting your heart broken can be hilarious too--at least at one point, and maybe if you're the morbid sort--so we're also open to stories that deal with heartbreak, uh, differently.)

Heads up for the next book collections! We also need stories on the following: (1) the joys and woes of "First Love" and (2) finally getting into that much-coveted relationship--and maybe finding out that it's a "Match Made" in heaven, or in hell, or, even worse, in relationship limbo.

Travel Research Grant

SLF travel grants are awarded to assist writers (speculative fiction, poetry, drama, creative nonfiction) in their research. They are not currently available for academic research, though we hope to offer such funds in the future. We are currently offering one $600 travel grant annually, to be used to cover airfare, lodging, and/or other travel expenses.

Our travel grants will be awarded by a committee of SLF staff members on the basis of interest and merit. Factors considered will include:

  • a one-page written description of the project in question, including details on the travel location and an estimated completion date (no more than 500 words)
  • a writing sample in the proposed genre (up to 10 pages of poetry, 10 pages of drama, or 5000 words of fiction or creative nonfiction); please note that the writing sample must be a solo work (work completed only by the applicant).
  • a bibliography of previously-published work by the author (no more than one page, typed); applicants need not have previous publications to apply.

If awarded the grant, the recipient agrees to write a brief report of their research experience (500-1000 words) for our files, and for possible public dissemination on our website.

PLEASE NOTE: This grant, as with all SLF grants, is intended to help writers working with speculative literature. If you're not sure what areas that term encompasses, we recommend referencing our FAQ (question #2).

Travel Grant Application Procedures

  1. Send the three items listed above to our travel grant administrators, Colin Harvey and Tiffany Jonas, as attached .doc files, to travel@speculativeliterature.org. Include a brief cover letter with your name and contact info (e-mail, phone in case of emergency). If you have questions, direct them to that same address.
  2. You may apply for travel to take place at any point in the following year (from October to the following October).
  3. Travel may take place from any country to any country, or internally within a country; the grants are unrestricted. Funds will be disbursed in U.S. currency (but can be sent through PayPal if that is more convenient for international recipients).
  4. Travel grant applications will be considered from July 1st to September 30th, annually. Applications received outside that period will be discarded unread.
  5. The grant recipient will be announced by October 15th, annually. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application by that date.

SLF staff and family members are not eligible for the Older Writers and Travel Research grants.
