“While it is so hard to imagine that humor and armed conflict could occupy the same basket, it is my experience that humor can heal wounds and bridge divisions. A casket arrives at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila, bearing the body of a woman manifested as "Aurora V. Cabahug" -- one of over 600 overseas Filipino workers who return as corpses to this airport every year. The real Aurora, however, is very much alive, a karaoke-bar singer in the distant town of Paez; the woman in the box must be her sister Soledad who used Rory's identity to secure a job in Saudi Arabia. No one knows for sure how the woman died; and the body waits to be claimed at the airport.

Dear Friends:
NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH: THE LARGEST WRITING CONTEST IN THE WORLD TURNS 10!
Oakland, Calif. --- www.NaNoWriMo.org --- September, 2008 --- There are some who say writing a novel takes awesome talent, strong language skills, academic training, and years of dedication.
Not true. All it really takes is a deadline – a very, very tight deadline – and a whole lot of coffee.
Last Friday, my former scriptwriting classmates and I got together with our facilitator Bing Lao, and we got to talking about the effectiveness of deadlines in spurring the writer to finish his work. I was sharing my experience sitting in on Butch Dalisay's Crime Fiction class this semester at UP Diliman, and told them that I accomplished a lot because of the inherent demands of a class. In other words, I was forced to work because I needed to submit something.
