Journalism and other matters

Being a journalist and a family man is not that easy. Just like a story, you need to plan every move, you need to be sure that every information is reliable and credible and that your way of writing is intelligible in order for the public digest your story.

I've been editor-in-chief of a local newspaper in Cavite for about two months now. It's a big break, you might say, but it is also a big headache. Having a managing editor who cannot manage, a news editor who cannot write good news stories, and associate editor who is not good in his Filipino so you need to overhaul his column and other stories.

Supervising them is just supervising my two women in the house: my widowed mom and my sweetie pie. My ageing mom is always insist her standard in making our Antipolo home neat and tidy. A small deviation from that standard of hers, will mean a war. My wife, on the other hand, is so persistent in being the 'panggulo.' She never knew how to sweep the floor properly, neither arrange her clothes neatly inside her closet and drawers. Me, I manage to be the husband and the wife in the house for because of my wife's not-so-good-housekeeping-skills, I need to do all the works.

Going back to journalism, it is always my passion though the business is not that passionate all the time. The pays are low, the deadline is always tight, and some of your colleagues will always drive you nuts.

However, the only consolation that you have is that byline or tagline under that story. But it'll be more good if you are being paid the right amount.

Anyways, we will talk about the remuneration later and how do journalists cope with the situation. And why, despite the hardships, the journalist will remain as a journalist. (I am going to Cavite for a meeting. Need to go now! Bye!)
