Philippines' Brillante Mendoza Wins Best Director in 2009 Cannes Film Festival
Congratulations to Direk Brillante, my scriptwriting mentor Bing Lao, and the cast and crew of 'Kinatay' !!! Another proud moment in Philippine Cinema !!! Yuhooo!!!!
congratulations to the hardworking direk mendoza!!!
i've met direk brilliante back when he was working on "masahista" and "foster child". i find him to be a very gracious person who appears to be sincerely dedicated to his filmmaking.
although i honestly don't find "masahista", his debut film, very interesting ( by the way, i watched it in my office repeatedly, back when i was working as a film editor ), i was struck by the beauty and grace of "foster child", which i suppose is either his third or fourth film.
"masahista" did not showcase the full potential of mr. mendoza's vision, but boy, after watching "foster child" i became convinced that direk brilliante has the talent and bravura to make even better films in the future.
and then came the news over the internet that mr. medoza's latest film, "kinatay", won for him the best director honors in cannes 2009. the award was a bit of a surprise for many people, because the film was not very well-received among the typical cannes audience. roger ebert even remarked that "kinatay" might as well be the "worst film shown in cannes ever". it was a remark that touched off a nerve among pinoy cinephiles and led to an angry barrage of emails and blogs decrying mr. ebert's allegedly biased opinion.
for my part, i have seen how "foster child" was also derided by my co-workers in the mainstream film industry as "a worthless waste of millions of pesos". it's quite natural that some films are simply anachronistic or beyond their time. most of mr. mendoza's previous films have been misunderstood in the same manner by the audiences, so perhaps the negative reactions to his recent two films that competed in cannes was just another day at work for direk brilliante.
i will undeniably watch "kinatay" the first chance i get to do so. many people might think that all the negative press they've been hearing about mr. mendoza's works ought to mean that his movies don't deserve to be seen. then again, should they pass over the opportunity, then perhaps they might miss out on seeing the film of a consummate craftsman at the height of his talents.
now if only the MTRCB were to be abolished so "kinatay" could be distributed freely around the whole country...
again, congratulations direk brilliante! i hope you make your future films even more honest and controversial!
