Racial Slurs ( Here we go Again! )

kibitzer's picture

It was probably a decade ago when we first heard of Claire Danes malign Manila as a "ghastly and weird" place, that "smelled of cockroaches, with rats all over, no sewerage system and the people do not have anything — no arms, no legs, no eyes." This isn't surprising as she exhibited the attitude of a typical elitist bitch from New York.  If she were an extraterrestrial who landed in the middle of the Dead Sea she would probably conclude that life didn't exist on Earth. All mouth and no brain makes Claire a bigoted airhead.

A few years back, we heard Teri Hatcher in "Desperate Housewives" checking her doctor’s credentials just to make sure that he did not earn his medical degree from "just some medical school in the Philippines" This is the scriptwriter's fault now. The S.O.B. underestimates our doctors.

A few days ago, the British Comedy Show from BBC, “Harry and Paul” featured a Filipina domestic helper being instructed by Harry to gyrate in front of

Paul.  See CLIP here.

They mock the beauty of our country, insult our intelligence ,and reduce our women OFWs to sexual objects. Those elitist bastards and bitches ( who are pathetically chained to a single language ) are stupid enough to commit the same mistake over and over again. We Filipinos are a sensitive and proud race. Mess with one of us, and you mess with all of us.

hello mike

I totally agree with you. I am against all kinds of discrimination. No human has any right to insult his/her fellow human beings in terms of their race, age, sexual orientation, physical and mental incapability and religious belief.

This should be stopped not only for all filipinos but also for those other people (whether asian, caucasian or black) who suffered the same treatment.

For all of us filipinos, despite all of the insults and mockeries thrown at us, we must continue to stand up  and show to the world that we are worthy of admiration and respect.

"hinahangin ang talulot na malaya, mula sa bulaklak na sinta hanggang sa matabang lupa.. siya ay ligaya, musa ng pagkadakila.."

Pmel's picture

Everyone's a little bit racist.

Even us Filipinos. And, if you feel so bad about the degradations by these Elitists, for goodness sake, help this nation grow!

"Don't cry over spilled milk! It's from China anyway!"

So I heard an Elitist Filipino from a golf club mutter to another. Isn't that also racists of them? What difference does it make?

Added::: If you ask me, Chinese people has all the more rights to be proud of their country because despite all their domestic problems, they were able to build such beautiful architecture for the Olympics! And!!!!!!!--- they launched their own Space Shuttle!!!  And!!!!!!!! --- they even TAUGHT their people not to PICK THEIR NOSES or PISS or SPIT on the streets! I just had to get this stuff out of my system. Thank you for tolerating my bitching.

I'd rather say,

"Don't moan over your wretched pride. It ain't much to lose."

ooops.. i'm guilty. so i don't have the right to complain. hehe..

spike_west's picture

I do agree with you pmel, kasi ako minsan guilty din ako. pero ibang klase na ito.

But Spike ...

Does it ever occur to you or other fellow Pinoys that those little slurs might be poking fun at the silliness/shallowness/egotistic personalities of the characters portrayed in those dramas? Like in Desperate House Wife for example.

Eva Longoria (IT WASN'T TERI HATCHETT!)!! obviously was playing a role of a character who is so full of her own vanity and sexuality, she disregards all other things? She has constant relationship with other men other than her husband? Even the way she treats her husband isn't exactly a good kind of behaviour expected of a good woman. So it's accepted that she'd be mean, selfish, and rude to other people she doesn't really understand. It's common.

And Teri Hatchetts -- well, they're rich people and some people are just not that educated enough or kind enough. Just keep in mind that all those watchamacall it characters in Desparate Housewives are shallow. Okay??

And everyone knows Claire Danes is just an example of a snobbish blondy. Even her acting skills sucked.

I mean, how well do you even know the American Culture? Before jumping onto conclusions, don't react. Analyse them first. And if you're afraid that it would ruin your reputation as a Filipino, reverse it. Your favorite word Spike! Reverse Psychology.

Added: And I actually think it's a good thing that they allow for this kind of scenarios cause they show the world how miserably and unjustly our peope are being treated by some! I'd rather have the world know of my amo discriminating me than suffering in silence!

You know what would upset me? When fellow Filipinos degrade and discriminates each other.

spike_west's picture

Heheheh

The Sad part is, discrimation is not part of any  culture. Teri can say it without being specific, (she could say "Third World Country" for instance). Although she was just playing her role, but  she was dragging our country's name in a very ghastly way.  And the American viewers can absorb that as well. Try to replace it with "Africa" , let see how the Black Americans would react.

This time, we all know that it is a comedy show, however they are potraying our DH as sloth or a low level human being, and it is not a joke. They made fun of us however I also believed that it will backfires on them. British government is very vigilant about racial discrimation, so I guess  we can regain our pride. I hope the result will be on our country's benefit.

But your comment is an eye opener as well.

Honestly ...

I was starting to wonder if I'm making any sense at all.

I just don't think people should get too defensive just because someone said something that's a half truth. It's a half truth Spike. No one will say anything horrible or suggest anything if it weren't true at all.

And tell me, can you really define the word, "Discrimination" without looking at a dictionary?

I think these kinds of "discrimination" is more personal than it is racial.

Calling Black people Monkeys or Nigger is a real form of racial discrimination.

Calling Filipinos intellectually bankrupt is personal. If it's racial, then it's calling us Coconuts.

What do you think?

spike_west's picture

I think.......

Yup they're many kinds of discrimination! but how come its a racial discrimination? It is because they generalized it, Terry specifically said "Philippines"

When you said "personal" meaning with regards to the behavior of a certain individual or persona, and Filipinos or Philippines is not a persona. (Obviously its a race)

So in all angles it’s Racial even in your examples above

But to be honest I know what you are thinking....

Thanks Spike! :)

Understood. I'm a go delete that embarassing post now. ;)

But I'm still sticking to my belief that we shouldn't get hasty with those kind of Televised remarks. We should get mad more if the kind of discrimination imposed on our people is physical abuse. I'm going to leave you with this proverb:

"Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.

We have to remember that words are just words. And they will only hurt you if you allow them to.

spike_west's picture

Hehehe!

I dont know if I explained it well, pero sang-ayon ako sa iyo ng 100 percent.

Jokes are half meant kaya nga may apoy kasi may usok, and we have to look deeper kung bakit tayo katawa tawa and do something about it.

Pmel's picture

Nah ... I am at fault myself.

I hope you aren't offended by the things I said. I know that it's not our people's fault that we all leave our nation in drones for better work. And I know too that it's not our people's fault that they chose the life they lead. It's all for survival and that it's difficult when someone as carefree as most citizens of the United States, who enjoys far better lives than we do, would carelessly say things that aren't meant for our people.

I asked a friend of mine if she would be offened if I, as a Filipino would say to her, "Hospitals of the United States of America sucks!" She said no. When asked why, she said because it is true. I don't know how true this is but that is what she said to me.

Perhaps what is said of the Philippines is a reflection of their own envy. I do not know. Meanwhile, others say our country is lacking in education. And out of my own experience Spike, I've found 3 out of 11 doctors who trully know their practice here in the Philippines.

So it's true in a way.

It is frustrating and it hurts. But why must we respond in the same manner, when we can just concentrate on what we need to improve? Emphasis on improvements rather than uptight defense! If it hurts that much, use it as a catalyst to boost our nations' education, economy and political stance!

Thanks Spike! I enjoyed our little talk. :)

spike_west's picture

No I'm not, why would I...

 I enjoyed too.

Pmel, we are in the midst of economic problems and crisis, and If you will hear someone putting you down it’s really disheartening. Now that America is also experiencing economic crisis try to make fun of them on international media and definetely you will experience  outrage or furies  from Americans. We know that we are in the bottom of everything (education, economic growth, etc …) but we are trying our best to uplift our nation’s dignity and pride, and if someone stumble us down , we should fight back and voice out our disappointments

Try to throw jokes on your American friend about their economic crisis then get back on me.hehehe

Filipinos are very sensitive about these things, why? Because these are the things that we have right now (pride and dignity), and if someone will take that away from us, we should not just accept it and show to the world the “Yes we are indeed a loser”. Hehhehe!!

But Pmel we agreed on this thing " we should do something about". We should stop whinning , we should find a solution to a more bigger and deeper problems instead.

Thanks for your insights, I really like exchanging ideas with you.
