Repertory Philippines 2008 Summer Workshops
REPERTORY PHILIPPINES 2008 SUMMER WORKSHOP April 8 - May 31, 2008
Enrollment is now going on for the Repertory Philippines 2008 Summer Workshop. Repertory Philippines will be offering the following workshop classes this year.
ADVANCED ACTING WORKSHOP
This class will be open to advanced students of past workshops who are seriously thinking of a possible career in the theater. Advanced principles of acting such as technique, script analysis, character analysis, concentration, improvisation, proper use of the voice and sense memory are all covered in these classes and culminate in the staging of a straight play or musical. The aim is to train a future generation of actors for possible roles in the season plays and big musicals of REP.
The class will be taught by ANA ABAD SANTOS-BITONG, a REP veteran and alumnus of LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) where she studied classical theatre. Ana recently directed the critically acclaimed HAMLET. Other Rep credits include Yeliena Ivanova / Natalyia Stepanovna in Anton Chekhov’s THE BOOR AND THE PROPOSAL, Jane in TWO AND TWO MAKE SEX, Harriet in NOBODY’S PERFECT, Mrs. Jane Villalobos in WHOSE WIFE IS IT ANYWAY, Audrey in LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, Vickie Reynolds in BUSYBODY, the Wicked Witch of the West in THE WIZARD OF OZ, Portia / Nerissa in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, Lucy / Maid in DRACULA, Grace Lamb in FAME, and Helga Gallimard in M. BUTTERFLY. Equally adept at heavy drama and broad comedy, she also performed in A BEDFULL OF FOREIGNERS, CACTUS FLOWER, ACCOMPLICE, RUN FOR YOUR WIFE, OUR TOWN, MURDER FOR RENT, ROMEO AND JULIET, THE HEIRESS, and THE CHERRY ORCHARD, among others. Her other Rep appearances include LONDON SUITE, LEND ME A TENOR, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, DINNER WITH FRIENDS, and many more. Outside of Rep, she has acted for Dramatis Personae, CCP, Actors Actors Inc, and the UP Playwright’s Theater’s FLUID. Ana studied classical theatre at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). She is also an endorser of the sports brand Fila.
ADULT BEGINNERS ACTING WORKSHOP
This class is open to adults 17 years old and above, who have no previous acting or workshop experience. Basic Acting Class covers all the necessary tools a student needs to learn to eventually go onstage confidently as a performer, and more. Students will be treated to fun and learning through theatre games and exercises that excite the mind, body and spirit. They will be trained on the enhancement of the senses, the use of focus and concentration, observation, and most importantly, attitude. Exercises will cover the proper use of the voice, which includes breathing and vocal prowess; the full use of the actor's body -- the main instrument of every performer; and of course challenging the mind and creativity of the artist.
Basic Acting Class culminates with a Musical Showcase. Its process inevitably teaches the students the importance of music as an art form and driving force. Students will be enlightened to how music alone can influence all aspects of a musical show which include but is not limited to, the design, the blocking and choreography, the character generation of the actors, and the over-all direction of the show.
Students in Rep Summer Workshops are also trained in putting the show together as a whole -- from auditions, to rehearsals, to production management, to finally marketing the showcase through ticket sales and sponsorship solicitation.
The class will be taught by ROBBIE GUEVARA who has almost 20 years of acting and 14 years of teaching under his belt which makes Robbie one of the most competent and skilled teachers in the Rep Summer Workshop. His teaching ability and wealth of knowledge in the field of Performance Art makes him one of Rep's most sought after teachers. Although his class covers the basics in all acting workshops -- voice, movement, creativity, observation and sensitivity, script analysis, blocking, choreography and musical communication. Robbie is most proud of his achievement to actually have some of his students eventually join Rep after the workshop.
REPERTORY SUMMER CAMP
These classes are open to children from ages 5 to 17 years old, who would like to experience the fun and excitement of rehearsing and learn about what it takes to stage a show. The art of acting is taught through various theater games, designed specifically to help children build skills on how to perform, be more confident and responsible. Through games they will become used to getting on their feet and moving around, they will accept the discipline that is necessary for playing a game on the grounds of fairness, and they will start on simple improvised situation drama using simple format themes close to everyday life. These games are chosen to benefit children through improved co-ordination, agility, experience the importance of teamwork, self-reliance, improve fluency and develop meaningful and lifelong friendships. The summer camp also culminates in the staging of a play or musical.
