Festival of Raw Artists

forArtists is a showcase of original, raw and innovative works of playwrights and scriptwriters. The festival will be a collaboration of theatre artists and aims to provide them with the opportunity to develop and exhibit their material on the REP stage.

This year Friends of Repertory or simply F.O.R was re-launched as a partner of Repertory Philippines (REP), comprised of theater performers and aficionados from various backgrounds and orientations. The group holds together for the love of REP and the long-term goal of instilling within the Filipino a key appreciation of theater and the performing arts.

With the aim of raising theater awareness and bringing the experience of theater to a broader audience, F.O.R.’s forArtists will highlight Repertory Philippines’ thrust in building a theater industry that can provide actors, directors, designers, choreographers, musicians, dancers, and all those who would like to work in theater the opportunity to do so.

forArtists will continue F.O.R.’s mission to open up avenues in which all theater and non-theater-oriented members of the community may interact and collectively recognize the importance of theatre in society today.

Mechanics:

- Present a script of a one-act straight play, musical, or musical revue (attach a brief summary/plot).

- Include all the necessary music (song clips, CD accompaniment, etc.)

- Material must be original and must never have been staged by a professional company.

- Material should live up to the standards of Repertory Philippines--- high-quality and meaningful.

- Material must showcase fresh, raw, and innovative ideas and storylines.

- Material must be in English.

- No less than 30 minutes in length.

- Must not exceed 45 minutes in run time.

Deadline for submission is July 7, 2008.

The materials chosen will be featured and staged at OnStage Greenbelt 1 as part of forArtists in October 2008.

Leading up to the showcase of the playwright/author’s work, the play will undergo intense workshops, from script revision to final staging, by notable Repertory Philippines Directors and veteran theatre artists (Baby Barredo, Joy Virata, Robbie Guevara, Chari Arespacochaga) at key points in the rehearsal process. This will give the directors of the chosen shows a chance to polish and flesh out their staging while providing the playwright/author time to perfect their material come stage time.

Each playwright/author whose work is chosen will be given 10,000 php to use for the staging of their work. They will be in charge of choosing the director, actors, crew, and whomever they wish to be part of their artistic and production team.

They may also hold auditions or invite theatre artists from Repertory Philippines or any professional and amateur theatre companies.

Participants will be able to earn money through ticket selling and soliciting sponsorships for the said event.

Tentative Schedule:

July 7 – Deadline of Submission
July 15 – Awarding of Chosen Plays
October 10 – Show Day

Theatre artists, critics and aficionados will be invited to watch and review the shows featured in F.O.R.’s forArtists.

During the rehearsal process, FOR will schedule consultation and preview dates in which REP directors and theatre veterans will be able to watch and critique the raw material (at least three times a month) and provide the playwright/author/director insights in staging to help polish the shows in preparation for the event gala.
