something new
Something New
I want something new
A boy told her mother
When asked what gift he’d like
One way or another
"Something new?” the mother asked.
The boy nodded quite certainly.
The mother touched the appointed task
Quite willingly.
“I am old, my child, what is new?” she asked.
“I may not find it with my old eyes, see?”
“Anything that’s not you,” said the boy.
“I want something new that’s not thee.”
“I want it without scratches, unlike your face,
I want it without spots, unlike your hands.
I’ve decided it should be fresh, unlike your gaze ---
I’d throw it away, if it’s not as I planned.”
The mother looked at herself and began to cry,
For the task was not viable for her outer eye.
She said: “I cannot blame his youth ---
But I want to give in to his desire.”
The next morning a flower bloomed
It was a new bud, and the boy was pleased
The following day was an occasion for gloom
For her mother turned to cease.
But the flower didn’t stay, just like her mother;
In his hand it wilted for it loved another.
Its youth faded, because it was a lie ---
And it was the boy’s turn to cry.
Love for mommies...
