The most stupid things stupid people do
A lot of stupid things plague our present world that if you try to analyze it you will have a hard time sleeping at night and may cause you insomnia and depression. Our senses can only take so much of the stupidity that this world can offer, and if our neurons endure so much insult from stupidity--just like our physical body, our brain suddenly will suffer from burnout and in due course may acquire disease--one of those dreaded ones are APATHY and INDIFFERENCE.
For thousands of years people in different races spent their lives in the shadows of traditions, culture and beliefs, most often backed by the religious fanaticism, and/or superstitious beliefs. I’m going to tackle beliefs not by those of sect and charlatans and of those extremists and fanatics, but just those common people’s thinking and principle where lays the foundation of everyday living.
Take for example Fiesta, feast, celebration, mardi gras—however you may call it, almost all the countries around the world have it, and our country being a ”third world” as it may seem is not exempted from this form of “social morphine” that makes people numb and dumb.
People from the province saves their entire money whole year round just to have a great fiesta celebration once a year in honor of their patron saint, as being sanctioned in full blessings of the church, in fact over the centuries the church (Roman Catholic) is the primary culprit of these kind of bullshit celebrations.
Farmers, slaughter their cattle, housewives rummage through their best of the best dresses and curtains, and start displaying and arranging their house, marketplaces are all flooded with items entirely for the anticipation of the fiesta, even kids put forward all their best suits tucked and hidden the whole year, reserved only to be worn on special day like this.
Local government goes frenzy with all the tourism promos and contests, pageants, awards; movie stars have their limelight all shine through these provinces with their fiesta appearances---and these entire ruckuses for what?
For the patron saint? A thanksgiving celebration for a wonderful year? I can’t see any logic to this kind of foolishness and straightforward bullshit. You spend almost all your earnings for a week long fiesta celebration, earnings that took you a year to scrimp and save.
To those of you parents out there who encourages, or even promotes and spearhead this kind of crap is giving away the future of their children into the bottomless pit of financial screw-ups.
Lets step a little farther away from the scenario and view the entire scene…What do you see? The government who also spends a lot of taxpayer’s money on trivial things, military budget that is ten folds higher than the education budget, three fourths of the budget allocation for debt service rather than the social services, such a pity sight.
The Cities and suburbs are also being plague by people who spends more than what they can afford, credit cards, cars, jewelleries, cell phones, not just TV’s but plasma TV’s. Not just watch but Rolex, not just GAP but Armani’s. Endless materialism, endless wanting, endless wasting. But if you look at the other side of the street, homeless families with their children begs for little loose coins just to eat, fighting and surviving in their early lives in the street just to have something to stuff in their stomach and sleep off their hellish situation.
We can’t cure this all social illness that is embedded in our skin and penetrates through the bones; otherwise we’ll end up all fucked up like Michael Douglas in his film ‘Falling down.’ All we can do is think about our children, the greatest thing on earth a parent can give to his child is the gift of frugality. The gift of financial independence, as life in this world are becoming more and more materialistic, a financial independence based on frugality and logical spending may save your children into the slavery of the corporate world and may spare them from falling into the pit of those wealthy brats whom they will dream of marrying for convenience.
Your children, if they learn how to hold on to their savings and do away from splurging on some party will refrain from knocking on your retirement door for some extra cash, cash that yourself saved for your twilight years and allotted for the funeral company’s disbursement, dying penniless is an embarrassing death.
The time is now; fuck all those insipid celebration that only lasts a moment only to be regretted for a lifetime.
a writer's role to society

One of the many roles of a writer is to poke attention to the otherwise drowsing thoughts of people who are long been under the thought of blind submissiveness.
Spare me of your medical equation buddy, it is most likely for me to have a cancer inhaling smog from Edsa than writing this post, or rather suffer a stroke while eating lechon on your fiesta.
300 years of Spanish rule leaves our country wrecked, culturally and morally. Until this very day, those tools that the colonizer utilized to divide and rule over us were still present. Look around you have you ever wonder why after so many centuries were still wallowing in the mud of subservient and passiveness that prevents us to think for ourselves and assert what is due to us.
If you think that feasts makes this world go round you are the most despondent person on this planet. There are much better purpose for the existence of man in this world other than celebrating feasts and merry making.
I may have used harsh words in my post, but is there anything about what I said that is not true? Yes, you can disagree in my choice of words but you can’t deny the severity of reality it reflects. I don’t think whispering sweet nothings in the ear of a sleeping slave could wake him up and rise against his bondage.

Because we believe that life is precious, we problematize on determining things that matter most so we can channel our energies for the realization of things worthwhile, things that will last forever, things that transcend the mutable, of course on the assumption that you believe with me that there's more to life than the here and now...
I think the core issue is blind obedience to customs, established norms, fads and beliefs without understanding their deeper whys and wherefores. Yup, encouraging people to be critical is a noble endeavor, but it can be quite tiring, too, hence the flak that thinkers receive in a world where people go by what they feel.
I have to admit that all work and no play makes jack a dull boy, and as to the objects of satisfaction to which people are drawn to, well, that remains a matter of preference and can never be the subject of profitable argumentation. But I am a believer of the adage favoring moderation (with exceptions, of course).
As a nation, we have misplaced priorities. Reason is, there's an entire history before us that made us think the way Rom pictured our confused selves, so I don't totally blame ourselves for that. If I were to make an excuse, I think we need a paradigm shift as a nation, and unless we make that (and I don't know how, except by being rational), we will stay misguided and lost.
Sorry Rom - I think stupid is too strong a word. For me, misguided is it. :)

I agree with what you said above, but I also agree with Ms. Ruth. :D I think stupid is too strong a word. These customs have been sooooooo ingrained that people do it because it's the usual. Not that they're really apathetic with everything that's happening nowadays, but that they've had centuries of conditioning. It will take more time before all these is removed from Filipino mentality. "Insensitive" is also a word I could add in this discussion, but yeah, stupid is too strong a word.

Why not write a (fictional) story where the Philippines is living the Utopian dream?
What kind of political agenda do they support?
Is it a Communist, Republican, Liberal, or Democratic society? You can even invent your own politics.
What is their economic situation like?
What kind of religion do they follow if not for Christian or Catholic etc?
What kind of attitude do the people have?
Are they trully happy? Or is it all fake?
Instead of writing about how miserable the Philippines is, why not write what it would be like if it has its own system where every one lives in Utopia?
I think I'll be more likely to believe your everyword if you are able to write that kind of story.
Of course, you don't have to ... I'm just saying. It would be nice if someone succeeds though. The thought came to me after watching a scene from "Gulliver's Travel." I might end up writing it ... but it may take me a while to finish. ^^;

just last week i was discussing the very topic that you suggest here with my daughter. you see, she had a writing project wherein they have to create their own "ideal" world - a utopian scenario complete with the type of government, religion, economy, political structure etc.
our discussion ends up much like the communist manifesto of Marx and Engels, the thought of Mao Zedong and the ploretarian ideals of Bonifacio. But of course we discuss it in the manner that her idea should float significantly, not mine -- i also had an apprehension of influencing her thinking about the matter.
anyway, your idea of a story seems great. but it would require an epic proportion to cover the whole area of a "utopian" society. if you would notice i often criticize age old blind tradition we have right here in the philippines to isolate it behind the thinking of the new generation, so that such practices should not (another dream) be carried out anymore for the generations to come. Hindi naman masamang mangarap e.
It is not my role as an artist to offer solutions and alternatives to the decaying society-- i leave that to the politicians and the authorities. My role is tell my observations in life. It is so happened that my eyes often focused on the "ironic" things in this world that you may find soooo pessimistic.

I understand your role, but, sometimes it's nice to give it a little possitive twist as a way to show your readers that anyone can be a leader if they think hard enough for a solution to our current affair.
I too am not all that smart. Heck, I can't even comprehend what the economic situation will be like in five years. Just that, "When you hit rock bottom, the only sensible thing to do is to get up again." What better way to do that but think what we must do to help ourselves? It doesn't matter if it will take you years to write it. Who knows? In the process of thinking of a solution, you might help yourself and those politicians along the way.
I do believe that some writers have influenced a lot of significant leaders in the past. I just don't have the evidence to support it. I think President Lincoln, St. Peters were one and so was Lenin. Definately, I am convinced that Lenin was influenced by the writings of Karl Marx and Machiavelli (I may be wrong though).
Rom ... I understand why you're mad with the Church ... and it's good you're seeing the issues here but ... you're coming off a little strong and in doing so, you sound nothing more than a quacking duck or a bleating sheep lost in the plains. Sometimes, it's nice to take the role of a shepherd, chosen or unchosen by god. Take initiatives.

i understand what you are trying to say, yes of course what you saw in my articles are merely "styles" a writer utilize to further push his issue. It does not necessarily reflects his personality. I maybe a staunch critic of the Catholic Church but that doesn't mean that i will throw stones on every church i happen to pass by along the road.
every issues/topic i wrote, i make it a point to accompany it with strong emotion. whether humor, anger, sadness, sarcasm etc. it is in this emotion that the reader can be moved, otherwise YAWN it is. five seconds is i think is every writer's allotment to capture his reader's attention. if you can't capture their attention with the emotion you offer--forget it.
Of course i do smile, laugh, cry and enjoy life in fact i'm living life at it's fullest--i know some of you might think that i'm a grumpy old man who do nothing but to seek people's wrong doings in life, the heck! mas maloko pa nga ako sa inyo e. I've been more of a "barkada" to my teenage daughters than to their friends, in fact ako pa nga nag make-up sa anak ko nung JS prom niya, now do you know a father who did that?
Im cool with the world but not on a chosen "issues" and that's strongly standing by my principles.
and by the way, i do take the role of the shepherd sometimes, remember that i initiate the COMPILATION BOOK a filipino writer's jamming? yes, i do take the lead sometimes, not just criticize.

I mean, I'm sure there are other subjects for you to write about.
Oh and uh ... I don't mean to sound boastful but, you've been putting my words in your mouth too. I'm flattered to think I'm that influential of a writer to affect you but ... I don't really know if I appreciate this kind of change. ^^;
And yeah you've initiated the Compilation Book but so far, have the meeting taken hold? I may not participate in the end ... inevitable things happen and I have priorities. So, I'll just watch from a distance. ;)

it is just the way it is. there are things that interest you, topics, subjects etc. it is so happened that preceeding our topic on spike west's post is the barrage of articles i wrote pertaining to bible. but that doesn't mean that it is because of you. you see all the post i have here that talks about the bible are all my OLD post from my blog. search my blog if you may the september 2007 archives.
i guess we DO NOT share the same views all the while when it comes to bible, actually i do not agree with your views most of the time, i can't see the reason why you said that i'm putting your words in my mouth. i'm always quoting the bible and the bible is always the basis in my writing, ARE YOU THE BIBLE? it is only coincidental that some of my works (you think) agree with you but i don't think you influenced me.
What you have read in my posts are old works of mine how can you say that YOU influenced ME? you have no reason to be flattered Pmel.
Yes i've initiated the COMPILATION BOOK, and i have talks with some people who might help us to accomplish it. we have a meeting scheduled nov. 30. As a writer, my obligation first is to my own self and second, to my readers. My obligation to myself includes being true to what I believe in and being honest to the naked truth I see around me, how ever much it may hurt. If I can't do that, then I can't fulfill my obligation to my readers.

My point here is that let's be mild, be tolerant towards, and be understanding of the human person.
Hitler was so hateful of the Jews, and so he murdered 6 million of them. Mao Zedong was also very strict with his countrymen that he slaughtered 26 million of his fellow Chinese. Pol Pot was another despot who obliterated the more than 5 million who wanted to stick to what they had practiced for centuries.
If somebody insists on others what he thinks is the right one, then we have an incredulous, dogmatic nihilist in our midst.

The POINT is ROm, you're not CONVINCING ANYONE!!!! The kind of argument you're using is argumentum ad personam, wherein you're using EMOTIONAL STRESSES to get people to SHUT UP and forcibly AGREE to all that you say. THAT"S BEING LIKE A TYRANNOUS POLITICIAN!!! --- The kind of people you hate!
Sure you're not imposing anyone anything BUT the way you write your response is ONE SIDED and has a LOT of holes where your claims, though VALID are NOT SOUND! So a lot of your claims are plausibly disagreeable and your arguments aren't convingcing, which as a writer is not the kind of result you would want!

The point Pmel is i know my grounds. with the kind of argument i carry in my article i can't convince any hard core--i know that from the start, that's why i try NOT to convince anyone i just put my opinion accross i publish my post and agree those who want to agree and disagree those who want to disgaree.
Dyeppri, Ruth and RJ santos agrees with me, the others do not including you how come you say i am not convincing anyone? besides i don't care if the world don't like my point as long as i RESPECT their rights to voice it out i don't suppress them. they (including you) could say anything you want about what i wrote and still roam free without fear of anything. this is a free country after all.
if you don't like what i wrote so be it. write your own post, disagree with me for all i care.
if i don't like your post i'll comment too and i will say what i want to say as long a i am respecting your rights and the ethics of this site.

Your arguments are QUESTIONABLE!
Sure, Ruthie and RJ might have agreed but they ALSO expressed their dissent towards your blog. RJ was playing it SAFE! Ruthie is experienced in the matters of the court where practice with argumentative papers is her profession.
I tried to offer you a different way of writing as it is my best card. And I regret to have fallen into my own emotional trap, of which I should not have done.
In the first two comments I have written in response to yours, I only offered another way for you to write your blog. Something possitive and you took that as an offense and offended me, thus the domino effect. In the end, I realized we were getting emotional so I decided to drop it. But you were being persistent and REFUSED to even consider some of the facts that CriticalMind offered, which I believe DOES MAKE SENSE and are sound ...( though Critical Mind, your grammars kind of confused me. ^^; )
I am not experienced in argumenting and neither are you. It shows in the disoriented arguments and this BLOG that you have written.
Further more, this blog is overtly NEGATIVE. Give us a breathing space that we may find more things to agree with rather than only a few.
While you have all the rights to say what you want, we also have the rights to rebuke your case.

No! The only thing we want to know is that you're FINE as in, you are tolerant of the kind of comments/suggestions we've provided but you don't seem to be happy with it, and that's okay. but, you're expressing so much anger towards us that it's hard for us take in all that you've said.

Rom, I'm not exactly a friend of yours, but, in as far as I've come to interact with you, you're the high tempered kind -- high blooded ... like me. So, all this stuff you've written about, makes it hard for me to take it as a joke cause, I don't think you fully understand what sarcasm, surrealism, or satire really mean to incorporate them in your writings.
So no, you're actually taking this all seriously. Spear me for being a hypocrite but, you need to lighten up once in a while. I do my best to be cheerful because I don't want to be labelled as EMO, depressed, butt-hurt, and all those horrible internet memes people are likely to throw at me if I am narrow-minded.

This issue has gone out of the proper context.
I do not mean to say that Ram is trying to impose himself on others. We know very well that only two to seven people read each of our blog entries, so, with that very puny audience, how could any one of us impose ourselves on millions others?
What I am trying to imply here is tolerance, understanding of the pluses and minuses of the human being. That's all. If that can not be taken, it would only be better if an end is put to all this.

I think Rom wrote this blog entry "the wrong way" but I still believe that his ideas are right. Harsh words do not make a statement wrong, just the manner it was spoken or written.
Unlike Spain, the Philippines doesn't have the resources to finance this fiestas in EVERY town AND STILL build schools, provide healthcare, make wider roads, etc. We can clearly see that, can't we? And aside from the necessary expenses, the Philippines is still very much in debt. Do we not know this? Why still spend money extravagantly when we can put it to better use, such as making sure our kids can go to and finish college to make this country better? These kids are, after all, the future of this nation (as Jose Rizal said).
That, to me, is the point of this blog entry. That's why I don't understand what's wrong with it (except for the way it was written). We have to be practical with money these days. If we still have money, that is.
