The Unwavering Pinoy: Are You "Mukhang Longkatuts"?

(Picture taken from http://neftriplecrunch.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/barack-obama1.jpg)Have You Ever Watched "Dirty Jobs" in Discovery Channel?
Mike Rowe dignifies "dirty jobs" in Discovery Channel every evening.
"Longkatuts" in the US do "dirty jobs". Even "longkatuts" in the Philippines need to be dignified. Americans don't look at American maids as "longkatuts".

"Trying to Dignify a Job"
Dude, seriously, I remember those days when my little sister would clog the toilet with her crap and tissues, and my mother-- she would make me clean it for a few allowances! I didn't mind doing it. Sure I complained, but in the end, it wasn't all that bad and I get the job done.
I don't understand why people would have to look at dirty jobs and say that it's not a dignified business. Hello? Earth to you people who think like that!
Robots are not perfected well enough to replace humans and do those jobs! If those people aren't around, who would? Certainly not a whiny, puny little spoilt brat who thinks of only beauty and glamour!
I think Mike Rowie wasn't trying to "dignify" those dirty jobs. He wants you to know, it's not as easy as sitting on your ass all day and staring at the computer screen! Besides, some of those dirty jobs pay more than call centers!
Do You Live In The Philippines?
If you don't, I totally understand your position. If you look at the history of Australia, Ford Automotive Company used to pull homeless white Australians off the streets just to work in their factories. Homeless Pinoys aren't pulled off the streets to work as employees in car factories. So, if you are not Pinoy, I would totally understand you. It's so outside your experience.

"Pulled off of the Streets to work"
Dude, you know, I spent some time volunteering for this charity schools that "pulls off" street kids from the streets and educate them - give them a chance to re-evaluate their lives and find honest jobs! Really, man, you sound like you don't go out enough: get out there and see for yourself! THERE ARE places in the Philippines that do what those Americans do. You just haven't "discovered" them yet, and that's probably cause you're cooped up in the same old place. Tsk, tsk, tsk!
Oh, and by the way, Ford Automotive is in America? Not Australia? I thought your sentence there sounded funny, but I checked and I was right: having learned the History of Cars sure has its uses!
Unless of course, you're from Australia and that's the history you've learned? 'Cause I've never heard of Ford Automotive Company having done that kind of deed in places other than the States, during the World Wars ...
your own observations?
did you do some research on this topic?
According to widespread perception (eh?), a Pinay who is "mukhang longkatuts" possesses certain facial features which would distinguish her as belonging to a category of the Pinay population characterized as, well, primarily ugly and totally unappetizing to discriminating eyes. This pathetic categorization carries with it the implication that the Pinay in question might actually be a maid employed in some well-to-do household.
Pinay maids in the Philippines are generally characterized as maleducated, barely literate, and totally incapable of rising above their status as mere servants--i.e., drones of manual labor inside the house. They are said to speak with an accent that many Pinoys mock as--if not painful to the ears somehow, then certainly almost unintelligible in a hilarious way. It can be said that owing to these qualities attributed to Pinay maids, they are relegated to a social standing far below the mainstream society.
who made this conclusion/generalization? you?
you even said that obama looks PERFECTLY like an African-American slave... really, now? have you seen an African-American slave recently?
put some references if you have some, thanks.
unless you're just stirring shit and stereotyping people because of their looks and race. that's bad.
I'd love to turn you on...
i agree with patrickman
I think there's something wrong about projecting this imagined "racism" that Filipinos have against their fellow Filipinos.
I think in a way, it's ethnocentric to think that this phenomenon of looking down on certain sectors is particularly unique or exagerrated to the Filipino culture.
Isn't it ironic that by overly criticizing these "observations" you are actually discriminating against a culture you think is guilty of such acts.
I personally don't find offense in references to Filipinos being house help or being mail ordered brides (my mother left a good job here and worked as a grocer in Calif). The same is true for Russians and Ukrainians. I think people who overreact on statements made about Filipinos are terribly insecure about their own pride of country.
In the same way that Filipinos are attributed with "lowly" profiles, we are also honored with great achievements. I think the problem lies in people making such a big deal about the bad and overlooking the good that other people say.

Let me say that I greatly appreciate your posts, and all your views are deserving of all respect. Contrary opinions exist to expand present ways of thinking, and any discourse, no matter how heated, must push boundaries. Many issues can polarize sentiments and sympathies--but at some point this polarization must occur if only in words, so that any convergence "covers all bases", so to speak.
Pmel, again, I would like to say that I welcome all your thoughts, and give my thanks.
I would like to clarify that the segregation of people into "social classes" is not particular to Pinoys. The Romans in ancient times had their "citizens" and their "slaves"--populations they conquered during the times they captured territory. If I remember history correctly, the gladiators who performed in the Coliseum were mostly Roman slaves. Roman slaves were the laborers who toiled night and day to build many Roman edifices that survive until today.
The Indians also instituted a "caste" system in their practice of the Hindu religion. "Brahmins" were the priests and teachers, "Ksatriyas" the warriors and rulers, "Vaisyas" the farmers and merchants and artistans et al, "Sudras" the laborers, and the so-called "Untouchables" the lowest class of all--the outcasts.
Even Pinoys themselves, during the early days of the Spanish Era in the Philippines, branded Chinese migrants as "pariyan"--a population which was marginalized as having less social stature than the "indio".
The classification of populations into "social segments" has been with us since ancient times.
Then again, that is how I view such classifications. They are ancient. They need to change.
I once read in a book titled "America's Boy" by James Hamilton-Patterson that a certain ambassador from Britain was so surprised at how Pinoy diplomats treated their maids at home. Pinay maids had no social security benefits. Pinay maids were not paid by the hour. Pinay maids were supposed to stay in their employer's house day and night. The quarters of Pinay maids were mostly inhospitable to normal human habitation. This British diplomat was wondering if Pinay maids were treated more like "slaves" rather than "workers".
Workers, after all, go to work only a certain number of hours per week. And they went home everyday after work. They have social security benefits. "Househelp" in particular is paid by the hour. The government is supposed to ensure that anyone who employs "househelp" could readily provide licenses, employment certificates, etc., whenever needed because of taxation rules.
No wonder that "househelp" is cheaper in illegal circumstances rather than being acquired in the legal, proper context. At least it is so in Britain. And so it explains why any normal working family over there would have no household help.
I think the mere fact that household helpers in the Philippines are not duly registered in any official registry and do not receive payment by the hour is...sad, to say the least.
Which is why I would rather see the word "longkatutz" erased from everybody's vocabulary.
I worked in showbiz, and I keep noticing that Pokwang--who is a very talented actress and performer, by the way--is stereotypically cast as "alalay" or "katulong" in Pinoy films. I never saw her cast as the manager of a bank, or advertising agency. She was never the "head of the household" ordering around maids who look like Anne Curtis, Kristine Hermosa, Cristine Reyes, et al. It makes me think.
And President Obama is a phenomenon. Even the Nigerians I spoke to tell me that they are proud of Obama's victory. It is the equivalent of seeing a Mangyan or a Bagobo native becoming President of the Philippines. Which I would welcome, by the way.
I am behind anybody who is branded a "mukhang longkatutz" to prove the naysayers wrong.
The very selfsame "parian" during the Spanish Era, after all, are now the taipans ruling the Philippine economy.
what's wrong with being a
what's wrong with being a Mangyan? what's your point in telling that "even the Nigerians" are proud of Obama's vitory? even the Nigerians? why do you relate Nigerians to Obama? because he's black? what's wrong with being black?
drop that racist crap, dude/dudette.
I'd love to turn you on...

"Longkatuts"
Whoa, dude! You have a lot of angst going on, there! Well, clearly, your anger is focused on those Social Elites, who like to mock everything that crosses their path; every Elite, even in the States, mock everyone from the lower level. It's natural. Unless you convert the nation into a Communist Country, you can't avoid this kind of discrimination.
It's a fact of life. You either deal with it, or you don't.
Our cook, she ain't exactly beautiful, but the food she makes - man, I do miss them and for that alone, I have a lot of respect for her. It doesn't matter if she sometimes have a bad attitude; she's a good mother, if not a loyal wife and a great cook!
People who don't respect their employees, well, just think - they don't have much to live for. It's a fact of life.
