When doing field work...

I have been travelling from one place to another for the last 6 months whether in the Visayas islands or in Mindanao. Every is a different experience when you are travelling specially if you are new to the place. You can learn a lot in every trip and below are some and common things that I think is helpful when travelling by land, air or sea.

1. Travel Light
It is a good thing to travel with less baggage specially if your trip is just a week or less. In this way you can avoid pick pockets in crowded places such us ports and terminals. It also means bringing enough clothes that are suited for your itenerary.

2. Avoid putting all your money in one wallet or in one place
Putting all your money in one wallet is very risky when you become a victim of pick pockets. To be safe just carry along with you enough money that you will need in order to reach your destination. Put your extra money somewhere else where it cannot be easily noticed by persons with bad intentions.

3. Communication devices
This includes cellular phones, usb internet dongles or any communication devices that can help you call for help in case an emergency arises. I suggest using cellular phones with dual sim capability or bring multiple sims from different operators, this is because not all operators have signals in remote areas such as mountains. And also make sure you have enough credits in your sim to make the necessary call or text.

4. Flashlight with extra batterries
Not all travels or field works are in places where everything is available. There are areas where you are required to trek to mountains and there will be instances that you will be coming down from mountains late at night. It is suggested that you bring flashlight for safety and security purposes. Extra batterries should come in handy in case you have forgotten to charged your flashlight.

5. Raincoat/Jackets
During rainy days, it is a must that you protect yourself from rain and as well as your important belongings such as laptop, camera and important documents that you bring along in you travel. Jacket is useful when you are at site during cold times, this should give you some extra heat and comfort when you are oudtdoors.

6. Camera
Every travel you made should be well documented whether it will be for project related documentation or simply a memorabilia of your travel. Different sceneries and different cultures are very common when travelling.

7. Water
Aside from food, water is also important because it will keep you hydrated specially when you are in outdoors. A liter of water should help if your destination is just less than a hour of trekking.

8. Extra food
Extra food is also taken into consideration when travelling because you will never now when you will get hungry or when will be the next bus stop.

Hope this helps...
