With Just a Little Respect
Have we ever wondered how the precious meat came to our plate? Let’s take a visit at some of the slaughter houses in the Metro. Pardon to those who are just about to eat. If one is to pay visit to an average slaughter house in the Metro, he/s will witness different ways of killing an animal before the butchers finally get their hands to work. The faint-hearted ones cannot stand the sight of animals being killed mercilessly. Some slaughter houses continue to use old fashion ways of killing an animal like clobbering them to death. Several tools are being used like bolos, knives and even steel pipes. One can see the poor beast crying out with blood while they are being stabbed to death. Animals are screaming helplessly, asking the butcher to stop hurting them but to no avail. They will continue to plea and cry out of blood until the very end. In order to get rid of blood, the butchers will also have to stab the beast in the neck. The lesser amount of blood left, the better the quality of the meat. In Cebu City, some meat dealers force the cattles to drink more water in order for it to gain weight. Despite their resistance, the cow can't do that much but to take in more water as they have no means of defending themselves. Small time meat dealers admits doing the practice. They insist that they have no other means of making a living. Of course, we all know that dogs are not just for pets but also serves as a side dish especially for the drinking crowd. They claim that dog meat makes the body warm, a perfect complement for an ice cold beer. Inevitably, it is a common dish in the country's summer capital, Baguio City. Recently, the city has been implementing new rules regarding the exotic dish. The dog eating practice goes on up to this very day. When an animal is being killed, their bodies produce toxins due to pain. This has a big effect on the quality of meat. There are more humane ways like using a stunning gun. Using this modern equipment, any animal will not undergo any pain. The beast will be oblivious of pain, no tears of blood, no skulls being crushed. Hence, a better quality of meat and a more gentle way of killing the beast. However, procuring the modern equipment is too costly for a small scale slaughter house. Cruelty to animals is against the Animal Welfare Act (AWA), which was passed several years ago. However, implementation proves to be far fetch for the poor animals. As Gandhi puts it in words, "A nation can be measured by the way it treats its animals". If a person do not treat its animals well, then we cannot expect them to treat other people that well either. Following this statement, it is clear that the Philippines have a lot of catching up to do. The country lags behind with in terms of implementing even the simplest laws. If the country cannot even take care of a low-life form like the animals, then perhaps, taking care of its citizens will continue to be an ideal. Much more, if the government cannot implement the simplest rules, then bigger laws can never be carried out.
